I have bought a lot of gifts for screenwriters over the years, and I have learned one thing the hard way: writers are oddly specific about their tools. Finding the best gifts for a screenwriter is tricky because they spend long hours alone in a chair fighting blank pages, so a generic mug just does not land. What they want is something that feeds the craft.
Our team matched the gifts screenwriters recommend to each other on r/Screenwriting against real products with strong review track records. We covered every budget, from stocking stuffers to statement desk pieces. Everything here rates 4.6 stars or higher.
Below you will find 12 gifts sorted by what they do: creativity sparkers, desk decor, practical tools, and comfort items for long sessions. There is something for the aspiring writer on their first feature and the pro who already owns three laptops.

1. Two Tumbleweeds Writing Dice – Beat Writer’s Block on Demand
Two Tumbleweeds Writing Dice – Story Prompts to Beat Writer’s Block
9 solid wood dice
Color-coded prompts
Millions of story combos
1 inch size
Pros
- Great way to beat writer's block
- Color coding makes it easy to use
- Millions of unique story combinations
- High-quality wood dice that last
- Fun for groups and collaborative storytelling
Cons
- Using all variations can be intimidating for some
- May not be as useful for experienced writers
I handed these dice to a friend stuck on act two of a thriller, and she texted me a full outline two days later. You roll the nine wooden dice, and the color-coded icons combine into prompts for character, setting, and conflict.
The design balances structure and freedom. Each die covers a different story element, so you get raw ingredients rather than a finished premise, which is usually enough to restart momentum.
The build quality is real: one-inch solid wood with clean engraving, not lightweight plastic. The box fits in a bag for coffee shop sessions.

Reviewers back that up. The set carries 552 reviews at 4.8 stars, with 86 percent five-star, and buyers call it a go-to for beating blank-page paralysis.
It also works as a group game for writing partners, since the prompts spark collaborative storytelling around a table.
The main limitation is depth. Writers with twenty scripts behind them may find the prompts basic, so this works best as a warm-up tool rather than a development aid.

Who is this gift best for?
Aspiring screenwriters, students, and anyone who talks about being stuck more than finishing. It works for novelists and playwrights too, so it is safe if you do not know their format.
What should you know before buying?
Nine dice at once feels overwhelming at first, so suggest starting with three or four. Also know the prompts are general fiction, not screenplay-specific.
2. Vintage Typewriter Pencil Holder – Retro Desk Presence
Vintage Typewriter Pencil Holder for Desk – 4.5″ Retro Pen Organizer Holds 30+ Pens, Heavy Resin Desk Decor, Nostalgic Gift for Writers, Authors & Typewriter Lovers
Holds 30+ pens
Heavy resin build
4.5 inch retro design
Desk decor
Pros
- Holds 30+ pens and pencils
- Solid heavy-duty resin build
- Realistic typewriter detail
- Compact footprint with big presence
- Works as desk decor and functional organizer
Cons
- Keys do not move
- Depth of holder could be slightly deeper
Every screenwriter I know has a mild obsession with typewriters, even the ones who write entirely in Final Draft. This resin holder captures that vintage look while storing more than thirty pens on the desk.
What surprised me was the heft. It is heavy-duty resin that stays put when you grab a pen mid-thought, and the detailing is realistic enough that visitors keep picking it up.
It is also genuinely practical. The four-and-a-half-inch frame holds thirty-plus pens while taking up less space than a coffee mug.

The numbers are strong: over 1,200 reviews at 4.8 stars, with 89 percent five-star. Buyers call it sturdy, authentic-looking, and a real conversation starter.
It doubles as decor even when empty, which is why it works on a shelf as well as a desk.
Two honest drawbacks: the keys do not move, and the cup could be slightly deeper for longer instruments. Neither stops it from being a great gift.

Where does it work best?
It fits a home office, a writing desk, or a studio shelf without crowding anything. It pairs well with the feather pen set later in this list for a vintage-themed bundle.
Who is this gift best for?
The screenwriter who already owns the practical gear and wants desk decor that earns its keep. It also suits a film student setting up a first real writing space.
3. Writer Emergency Pack – The 52-Card Block Breaker
Writer Emergency Pack
52 cards total
26 Idea and Detail cards
Writer's Digest praised
Pocket size
Pros
- Great cure for writer's block
- Simple instructions for use
- Plastic-coated cards like playing cards
- Mentioned favorably by Writer's Digest
- Suitable for creative writing classes
Cons
- Each concept takes two cards (Idea + Detail)
- Can be cumbersome to find matching pairs
- Some users felt they got only 26 prompts instead of 52
This is the gift screenwriters recommend to each other by name. I have seen it come up repeatedly in r/Screenwriting gift threads, and Writer’s Digest called it a portable tool for story resuscitation.
The system works in pairs: 26 illustrated Idea cards and 26 Detail cards with specific suggestions. You pull one of each and let the combination point you out of a corner.
The cards have a plastic coating like playing cards, so they survive being shuffled and crammed into a laptop bag. At 3.6 by 2.5 inches, the deck fits in a jacket pocket.

Instructions cover both solo use and classroom settings, which is why writing teachers keep buying it. Reviewers rate it 4.6 stars across over 770 reviews.
It is a favorite for NaNoWriMo participants and creative writing groups, not just screenwriters.
The common complaint is structural: each concept needs an Idea card plus a Detail card, so some buyers feel they got 26 prompts instead of 52. Fair, but worth knowing.

How does it compare to the writing dice?
The dice are faster for warm-ups, while this deck goes deeper on craft with concrete suggestions on every card. Many writers end up wanting both, which makes a strong bundle.
Which writers get the most from it?
The working or actively writing screenwriter who hits blocks regularly and wants a tool, not a toy. The classroom instructions make it doubly useful for anyone who teaches.
4. Movie Film Clap Board – Set the Scene at Home
Movie Film Clap Board, Hollywood Clapper Board Wooden Film Movie Clapboard Accessory with Black & White, 12″x11″ Give Away White Erasable Pen
Natural wood build
12 x 11 inch board
Erasable pen included
Chalk surface
Pros
- Natural wood construction
- Traditional wooden surface works with chalks
- Erasable pen included
- Can be used as room decoration or shooting props
- Reusable writing surface
Cons
- Wet towel needed to erase - not dry-erase
- Some users may prefer larger size
Sometimes the best gifts for a screenwriter are the ones that make their space feel like a real production office. This 12 by 11 inch wooden clapboard does exactly that.
It ships with an erasable pen, so you can write scene numbers, takes, and inside jokes right on the board. The surface is a traditional chalk finish, which is period-correct and part of the charm.
With over 2,700 reviews at 4.6 stars, this is the best-selling clapper board on Amazon, and 77 percent of buyers gave it five stars. The natural wood feels authentic rather than toy-like.

Reviewers use it for table reads, wrap parties, and school productions, and plenty just hang it on the wall as cinema decor.
It doubles as an actual slate for anyone shooting short content on the side.
The one flag is erasing: you need a wet towel, not a dry cloth. Some buyers also wished for a larger size, though the dimensions match real set use.

What are the practical uses beyond decor?
Marking scene numbers during table reads, slating read-through videos, or signing boards at a film school graduation. If they shoot side projects, it works as a real production slate too.
Is the included pen good enough?
For a one-time scene label on a display piece, yes. Heavy users often upgrade to chalk markers for crisper lines.
5. Writer Wooden Box Sign – The Reminder They Need
Writer Gifts for Women Men, Cool Gifts for Writers Author Novelist
5 x 5 inch wood sign
Tabletop or wall mount
Inspirational quote
Lightweight
Pros
- Cute gift for writers
- Perfect size for desk or shelf
- Sturdy wooden construction
- Clear neat printing
- Nice saying - inspirational for writers
Cons
- Some corner damage reported in shipping
- No protective packaging
Sometimes the right gift is a single sentence placed where the writer sees it every day. This five-inch wooden box sign reads “Someone Out There Needs Your Writing.”
That is exactly the message that matters during a rough draft at two in the morning. The box shape stands on its own or hangs on a wall above a writing station.
At 1.3 inches deep it has real dimension rather than sitting flat like a typical plaque. Reviewers praise the print quality and the clean, burr-free wood cut.

The ratings are excellent for a small decor item: 4.8 stars with 86 percent five-star. It has become a popular gift for journalism students and writer friends.
It suits Christmas, birthdays, graduations, and thank-you gifts alike.
The recurring complaint is shipping, not the product. Minimal packaging means occasional corner damage in transit, so inspect it on arrival.

Where do people usually display it?
On a writing desk, a shelf next to screenwriting manuals, or a home office corner. It is small enough for a dorm desk, and the wall mount works above a mood board.
Does it work as part of a gift set?
That is where it shines. Pair it with the writing candle or the teas later in this list for a themed care package that costs very little overall.
6. Miracu Writing Candle – Calm for Late Night Drafts
Miracu Writing Candle, Writer Gifts for Women, Author Gifts for Writers
9 oz soy wax
Lavender scent
50 hour burn time
Gift box included
Pros
- Inspirational gifts for writers with humor and empowerment
- Lavender scented with fresh and floral aroma
- Made with natural wax and essential oils
- Burns evenly and lasts about 50 hours
- Colored box included
Cons
- Nine ounces may be smaller than expected
Long writing sessions are as much about atmosphere as tools. This nine-ounce soy candle is made specifically for writers, with a literary label and roughly 50 hours of burn time.
The scent is lavender, which is a deliberate choice: fresh and floral rather than cloying. The wax is natural with essential oils, so it burns clean instead of synthetic.
Reviewers at 4.7 stars highlight two things: it burns evenly all the way down, and the label messaging lands well with writers.

It ships in a colored gift box, which matters more than you would think. It arrives ready to hand over with no extra wrapping, making it one of the easiest last-minute gifts here.
That also makes it a safe pick when you cannot preview it in person.
The honest caution is size. Nine ounces is standard, but some buyers expected larger, so check the dimensions: 2.8 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall.

What occasions does it suit?
Christmas, birthdays, graduations, and thank-you gifts for a mentor or writing partner. The labeling works for novelists, poets, journalists, and screenwriters alike.
Is soy wax actually better for writers?
It burns cleaner with less soot, which matters next to a laptop or stacks of printed scripts. Lavender is also one of the gentler options for scent-sensitive writers.
7. IMDb Top 100 Movies Scratch Off Poster – A Watching Checklist
Official IMDb Top 100 Movies Scratch Off Poster | Premium Bucket List – Made in USA | 16.5×23.4 Inches | Unique Gift for Men and Women Film Lovers | Movie Night Supplies and Room Décor
Official IMDb license
100 movie designs
A2 poster size
Made in USA
Pros
- Officially licensed by IMDb
- Professional illustration and detail
- Superior print quality
- Scratches off cleanly
- Vibrant images under scratch-off
- Made in USA
- Standard A2 poster size fits frames
Cons
- May arrive with damaged packaging
- Requires careful scratching technique
Screenwriters are supposed to watch everything, and most keep a mental list of classics they have not seen. This officially licensed IMDb poster turns that guilt into a game.
Each of the 100 titles sits under a scratch-off layer you remove as you watch. Underneath is an original mini poster design with real illustration detail, not just a printed title.
At 16.5 by 23.4 inches it is a standard A2 size, so framing is cheap and easy. It is printed in the USA with a glossy finish.

Nearly 1,500 reviewers rate it 4.7 stars and consistently call out the print quality and clean scratching. It is a proven gift for film lovers of every stripe.
The revealed artwork is vibrant enough to stand on its own as wall art.
Two practical notes: the packaging occasionally arrives dinged, so order early, and rushing the scratch can leave the reveal patchy. A coin and patience solve it.

How does it help their writing?
Studying great films is homework for screenwriters, and this is a structured syllabus. Watching with intent, then scratching the square, builds a habit that feeds the craft directly.
What frame should you pair with it?
Any standard A2 frame, ideally black to make the black and gold design pop. Add a frame and a coin, and the whole kit is ready on day one.
8. VANGOAL Vintage Feather Pen – Write the Old Way
VANGOAL Vintage Green Feather Pen and Ink Set, Classic Series Goose Quill Pen with Carving Pen Stand, Calligraphy Pen Nibs, Black Dip Pen Ink, Antique Writing Gift for Writer
Goose feather quill
Metal barrel
30-60 words per dip
Gift set packaging
Pros
- Elegant vintage design
- Natural feathers crafted by artisans
- Durable metal barrel and nib
- X-shaped ink storage for 30-60 words per dip
- Includes replacement nibs
- Beautiful gift set packaging
Cons
- Some nibs may be cheaply manufactured
- Storage position may affect nib longevity
- Ink may be considered mediocre
There is a specific joy to drafting notes by hand that no keyboard replicates, and a quill makes an event out of it. This set has a natural goose feather, a durable metal barrel, and a carved pen stand.
Our team gave this as a graduation gift and it got the strongest reaction of anything we handed out. The packaging alone feels like a period piece.
The X-shaped ink reservoir holds enough for 30 to 60 words per dip, so you are not re-dipping every sentence. Replacement nibs and a bottle of black ink come in the box.

At nearly 5,000 reviews and 4.7 stars, it sits at number three in its category. Reviewers praise the smooth writing experience and the craftsmanship of the natural feathers.
It is a set, not a single pen, which is why it reads as a proper gift.
Know the trade-offs: the spare nibs are hit or miss, and the included ink is unremarkable. Serious pen people will upgrade those parts.

Is it usable or just decorative?
Genuinely usable for notes, journaling, and marginalia on printed scripts. Treat it as a beautiful everyday pen rather than a precision instrument.
Who appreciates it most?
The writer who romanticizes the craft and keeps nice notebooks. Pair it with the typewriter pencil holder for a cohesive vintage desk setup.
9. Novel Teas Book Lover’s Tea – Fuel for the Draft
Novel Teas Book Lover’s Tea contains 25 teabags individually tagged with literary quotes from the world over, made with the finest English Breakfast tea, for the book lover
25 teabags
English Breakfast tea
Literary quotes on tags
Oprah List pick
Pros
- 25 individually tagged teabags with literary quotes
- Finest English Breakfast tea
- Featured on Oprah's List of 50 Gifts the Book Lover will Adore
- Perfect gift for book lovers
- Great stocking stuffer
Cons
- Tea flavor may not suit all preferences
Writers run on caffeine, and this tin of 25 teabags makes the habit feel literary. Every tag carries a quote from classic literature, so each cup comes with a line to sit with.
It made number 14 on Oprah’s list of 50 gifts the book lover will adore, which is a nice credential for a stocking stuffer. Read em and steep, as the tin says.
The tea is a proper English Breakfast, which is the right call for a general gift. It is bold enough for morning pages and neutral enough that almost anyone will drink it.

Over 2,400 reviewers rate it 4.7 stars, and it ranks 78th in Amazon’s entire tea sampler category. That tells you how consistently it has sold as a gift.
One tin covers 25 writing sessions, so it works for a whole writers’ group too.
The only caution is taste. English Breakfast is a black tea with real body, so if your writer drinks only herbal, this might sit in the cupboard.

How should you gift it?
On its own it is a perfect stocking stuffer. Combined with the writing candle and the wooden sign, it becomes a genuinely nice writing-session care package.
What is the shelf life like?
Tea is shelf-stable for a long time kept sealed and dry, and the tin protects the bags better than cardboard. It is one of the safest items to buy early.
10. Glocusent Neck Reading Light – Write Without Waking Anyone
Glocusent Reading Light,Bendable Neck Light,80-hr Rechargeable Book Light
3 colors 6 brightness
80 hour battery
USB-C rechargeable
Neck design
Pros
- 3 colors and 6 brightness levels
- Rechargeable with USB-C up to 80 hours battery life
- Ergonomic hands-free design
- 90 degree narrow beam angle does not disturb partner
- 24-month warranty and 60-day return
- FCC CE RoHS PSE and C-TICK certified
Cons
- Not waterproof
- No adapter included
- May need to aim beam carefully
Most screenwriters I know do their best work late at night, usually next to a partner who is already asleep. This neck light solves that exact problem.
It drapes over your shoulders and aims a narrow 90-degree beam at the page or keyboard, leaving the rest of the room dark. Buyers mention the partner-friendly beam constantly.
The specs are strong: three color temperatures from warm 3000K to cool 6000K, six brightness levels with independent arm controls, and a USB-C battery that runs up to 80 hours.

Then there is the review base: over 158k ratings at 4.7 stars, ranking fourth in its category. You are not gambling on an unproven product.
It is lightweight at 137 grams, and the neck bends into any position you need.
It ships with a 24-month warranty and a 60-day return window, and carries FCC and RoHS certifications. No adapter is included, only the charging cable.

Does it work for scripts and laptops too?
Yes, and that is the point. Reviewers use it for reading, knitting, repairs, and detailed paper work, and it is ideal for marking up printed drafts in bed.
How does it hold up long term?
It takes a session or two to find the right beam angle, but the bendable neck makes that easy to repeat. Just note it is not waterproof for outdoor writing.
11. LEGO Typewriter with Flowers – A Build Between Drafts
LEGO Creator 3 in 1 Typewriter with Flowers – Building Toy with 3 Building Options, Typewriter, Flowerpot with Pen & Notebook, or Keytar – Gift Idea for Birthdays – 31169
363 pieces
3 build options
Typewriter keytar or flowerpot
Display model
Pros
- Fun and relaxing build process
- Attractive display piece once finished
- Creative 3-in-1 design adds versatility
- Clear instructions beginner-friendly
- Nice mix of flowers and mechanical detail
- Great quality
Cons
- Not a play set more of a display model
- Small pieces can be easy to misplace during building
- Keys don't actually type
Screenwriters need something to do with their hands while thinking, and this 363-piece set is a perfect thinking activity. You can build it three ways: a typewriter with flowers, a keytar on a stand, or a flowerpot holding a pen and notebook.
The typewriter build is the obvious pick for a writer, standing over five inches tall with a mix of mechanical detail and floral softness. Three sticker accessories with thoughtful phrases add a small personalization angle.
The reviews are about as good as LEGO gets: 4.8 stars across over 1,600 ratings with 92 percent five-star. Buyers describe the build as relaxing and the result as display-worthy.

The clear instructions make it beginner-friendly even for someone who has not touched LEGO in decades. Most buyers of this set are adults buying for themselves.
The 3-in-1 rebuild factor gives it shelf life, since the same bricks become three models.
Set expectations: the keys do not type, and LEGO frames it as a display model. It is a meditative build with a beautiful outcome, not a functional replica.

Is it good for adults or just kids?
The 8-and-up rating means any adult can build it comfortably. The appeal for a writer is the forced pause: ninety minutes away from the draft is sometimes exactly what a stuck writer needs.
What if they already have LEGO sets?
The three rebuild options distinguish it from a single-build set. It pairs naturally with the typewriter pencil holder for a writer-themed desk.
12. Metal Bookmarks with Tassel – Mark the Script Page
4 Pieces Metal Bookmarks with Tassel, Golden Hollow Bookmark Oil Painting Theme Book Mark Bookmarks for Book Lovers Writers Readers Children Teens Men Women Adults
4 bookmarks per set
Hollow metal build
Oil painting themes
4.1 inch size
Pros
- High-quality hollow metal with elegant chain
- Beautifully printed and not easy to fade
- Exquisite printing and texture
- Retro literary style design
- Colorful oil painting patterns
Cons
- No warranty provided
Screenwriters read constantly, whether scripts, craft books, or source novels, and they never have a proper bookmark. This set of four fixes that with hollow-metal construction and elegant tassel chains.
The oil-painting themes, including water lilies and sunflowers, carry a retro literary style that fits a writer’s aesthetic. The gold-tone finish also photographs well if they share their desk setup.
At 4.1 inches long, they are tall enough to mark a thick screenplay collection without disappearing into the pages. Over 1,600 reviewers rate them 4.7 stars with 84 percent five-star.

Reviewers consistently call out the print quality and the fact that the designs do not fade over time. The set ranks fifth in Amazon’s bookmark category.
Four to a set also makes this one of the most cost-effective gifts here per piece.
The only listed drawback is the lack of a warranty. The tassel chains deserve gentle handling, but the metal itself is sturdier than laminated card bookmarks.

Are they durable enough for daily use?
Yes, with reasonable care. Treat them as everyday-carry bookmarks rather than delicate keepsakes, and they will last for years.
When does this gift make the most sense?
The easiest low-risk pick on the list for a screenwriter of any level. Because you get four, you can also split the set across several small gifts.
How to Choose the Right Gift for a Screenwriter?
Picking well for a writer comes down to matching the gift to where they are in their journey. A first-time writer and a working professional have very different needs, and the fastest way to miss is to guess without thinking about their daily routine.
Start With Their Writing Environment
If they write in bed or on a couch beside a partner, the neck reading light wins. A dedicated desk points to the pencil holder, the wooden sign, or the LEGO typewriter, while coffee shop writers need things that fit in a bag.
Match the Gift to Their Experience Level
Aspiring screenwriters benefit most from creativity tools like the dice and the emergency deck, which exist to get unstuck. Working professionals already own the software, so atmosphere gifts like the candle, the clapper board, or a beautiful pen land better.
Solve a Problem They Have Complained About
The best gifts for a screenwriter address a specific frustration. Late nights mean lighting problems, stuck scenes mean block-breaking tools, and backsliding motivation means a visible reminder like the wooden sign.
Build a Bundle Instead of Buying One Thing
Forum threads keep landing on the same conclusion: thoughtful beats expensive. My go-to writing-session kit is the wooden sign, the candle, and the teas; a creativity bundle pairs the dice with the emergency pack.
Consider Timing and Shipping
A couple of items here have known shipping quirks. The wooden sign sometimes arrives with corner dents and the scratch poster can show up dinged, so order early enough to inspect and replace. Everything is Prime eligible and in stock.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good gift for a screenwriter?
The best gifts for a screenwriter support the craft: tools that break writer’s block like writing dice or an emergency card deck, comfort items for long sessions like a neck reading light or candle, and desk decor that celebrates their identity as a writer. Practical gifts that solve a daily frustration get used far more often than novelty items.
What do writers like as a gift?
Writers consistently recommend tools over trinkets: quality pens, good notebooks, index cards, creativity prompt decks, and screenwriting books. On Reddit gift threads, the Writer Emergency Pack and books like Save the Cat come up repeatedly. A thoughtful gift tied to their current project beats an expensive generic one.
What does every writer need?
Every writer needs a way to capture ideas, a comfortable place to work, and a method for getting unstuck. That translates to a reliable notebook or cards, proper lighting and ergonomics for long sessions, and a block-breaking tool like dice or prompt decks. Time to write is the one thing you cannot buy.
How much will Netflix pay for a screenplay?
Netflix typically does not buy unsolicited screenplays directly from writers. Deals usually go through agents, managers, or established producers, and WGA-scale payments for an original screenplay can range from around 75,000 dollars into the millions for established writers. New writers generally need representation and a strong sample script to get in the door.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the best gifts for a screenwriter does not have to be a guessing game. The Two Tumbleweeds Writing Dice are our top pick for beating writer’s block, the Glocusent Neck Reading Light is the workhorse gift with over 158k reviews, and the vintage feather pen set delivers the most elegance for the money. For tight budgets, the wooden desk sign and the metal bookmarks prove a thoughtful gift can cost less than lunch.
My advice is to buy for the writer’s actual routine, not the fantasy version of it. Look at where they write, when they write, and what they complain about, and the right pick here becomes obvious. Any of these twelve shows them you take the work seriously, and that is the part they remember.
